Ocean, Sri Lanka, before she became a Republic was well known as Ceylon.
In the pre-colonial era she was also referred as Zeylon and Serendib. Sri
Lanka's location is between the latitudes 5N55 and 9N55 and longitudes
79E30 and 82E00. The total area is about 25000 Sq.Miles. The capital of
Sri Lanka is Colombo. Other major cities are Kandy, the last hill capital
of Sri Lanka, Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Jaffna and
Batticaloa. There are many townships that attracts foreign and local
tourists.
The island boasts of lush green
vegetation and warm to cold climates through out the year. There are no
seasons like winter, spring, summer and autumn in Sri Lanka. The climate
varies according to the location by altitude and time of year. For example
Nuwara Eliya is located in the hills. The altitude is 6200 ft (2000 M) and is cold
throughout the year. The weather gets accentuated with the movement of the
Sun to the Solstices.
Almost the whole country is geared for tourism. In every town there are
Government Tourist Information Offices. Hotels and Guest Houses are in
plenty and vary by their standards to suit every level of tourist.
It is easy to communicate in Sri Lanka. More than 87% of the population
is literate. Many speak English fluently. While there are the actual
Tourists' Guides who speak other languages like French, German, Spanish or
Japanese. There are three languages in use by the Sri Lankans. These are
Sinhalese, Tamil and English. Also there are a few who can communicate in
Hindi.
Travelling too is easy in Sri Lanka. Major cities are connected by
railway and ofcourse main highways. Both Government and privately operated
bus services are available island wide. The buses are air-conditioned and
of semi-luxury type. The hoteliers operate buses which are solely
dedicated for their clients and are luxury class. Further there are the
taxis, commuter vans and three wheelers to meet short distance travelling
requirements. Air travel within the country is possible in air planes
operated by private companies or the Government operated Sri Lankan
Airlines which is our national carrier which flies to all major cities in
the world and operates branch offices in all the major towns of the
country.
