The last King
of Sri Lanka reigned the country from Kandy. Hence it is still known as the Hill Capital. Kandy is in the central hilly regions. The climate is cool to warm. The nights are cooler and gets quite cold in December. The mean altitude of Kandy, can be approximated at 1800 Ft (548M) above sea level. Kandy is one place any tourist falls in love with, because of its natural beauty. There are many places to see in Kandy .

The Kandy Esala Pageant is world famous. This annual pageant is the most colorful and exciting pageant of the country, still alive from the past. Many dancers and elephants take part in this pageant, during the month of
Esala. In this year the pageant will be held from 11 August 2005 to 20 August 2005. In the next year the pageant will again be held during the Moon month of Esala.

On the left is a picture of the Temple of the Tooth. It was the Palace of the last King of Kandy. In this temple is enshrined the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. It is believed that when sacred relics are brought outside and paraded, the rains come in plenty. Therefore, every year during the month of Esala the sacred relics are taken in procession, round in the streets of the City of Kandy. The rains definitely come. The farmers then begin preparing their fields for paddy cultivation.
